Ezza today broke his PB and the Aust DS record again with a crackin' 203 MPH with his Opus MC3, at the DS spot closest to his house. There's an article and info about the record breaking flight on RC Groups: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=788888By the way, this Windsock thread's missing the vital point that Ezza took the record from 171 to 184 on 29 October. He and Sean are both listed on this summary of DS planes and pilots and speeds: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=698170 Pretty hair raising flying by the sounds of it ... and very interesting that he increased the elevator throws by 20% to ping the bottom turn harder, which straight away picked the speeds up from around his previous PB of 184, up to the 200's. Onya Ezzzaaaaaarrrggh!!

That's fantastic. The loads on that plane are enormous and you can get a great feeling for it in that vid. best Matt

Great to see such awesome speeds acheived by Ezza. The first Youtube video looks like a slope I fly at about 10 minutes from my house at Withcott. A great spot, landing a bit tight. Is the second video taken at the lighthouse in Byron (above Wategos)? I grew up at Mullumbimby. Most of my slope soaring in Byron was done on the east facing hills above the golf course. Loved flying Lennox as well (pre DS) but there were some issues with the hang glider guys in those days. Hope to be down there again soon. Might take my Bluto with me this time if my wife lets me.
Regards, Jesse

Hey yeah, great, welcome and thanks for joining up!
I'm sure Ez will reply but 1) A lot of Ezza's earlier DSing and his earlier record was at Withcott. He reckons it's a great spot but needs a strong SE to penetrate that far inland. It's great to hear that you live close to the site! It would be great to be able to call you up to find out what the wind's like up there!!! Sean and I have never DSed there and we'd be keen but it's a long way to go if you're not confident about the conditions!
2) Yes, the vids of Byron are in the big bowl on the north side of where the lookout and hang glider launch is. It's a really gnarly spot to DS as you have to walk back westward along the road BELOW the ridge on the backside for about 150m before you can DS! If things went bad there's no way you could get back to the front slope in a hurry. You have to keep the plane in the visible area ... hard to explain. Then to land you have to walk back up, keeping the plane in sight in the gap of visibility over the ridge. Then you have to dart between gaps in trees, keeping the plane in sight, so you can get up to the HG launch ramp so you can land in the thick woody scrub - if you're a few metres off it can be quite a retrieval job! Most people would never have tried to DS there but Ezza is a very cool and determined DSer!

Welcome Jessesoric, Thanks for the comments. I did most my ds training out there at Withies. Wish I had known another ds'er back then, especially one that lived so close. I love that spot but like you say landing is a little "tight". The wind does get out there good whenever it is blowing S or E. Just that it rarely gets over 20knots. Eventually I wanted to find somewhere windier and Byron is a windy place. Could have saved myself alot of driving but it took a while to recognise and build confidence to ds treeline places. I like to go to Withcott when we have the big low pressure systems sitting on the coast. Raining too much at the coast but usually still nice out there. I'll shoot you a PM if I'm ever going out there. There is another spot near you, Mt Gowrie just past Toowoombah. It was first flown by one of our previous members, Steve. Sean has also ds'ed there. Sean said it had lots of power but it was basically a pile of rocks. It is an old crater. Would like to check it out as it is windier up there than down at Withcott. Amazing you used to fly/live down here. You obviously know the place well. I often fly those eastern slopes at Byron. They are great for light slope/thermal conditions. Coorabell ridge with all the consistant northerlies(like today), would be our number 1 place for most of the year. Great lift, long grass and several locations to fly from. Skennars head is a great seaside slope and so is Lennox. Unfortunately the hang gliders are still 'all over it' when there is anything from the North at Lennox. I guess it is how they make a living but can be a little aggresive which is a shame. I like to fly Lennox when it is an easterly as you can ds the cornice on the big cliff. Lets us know if you are ever down this way, I'm always keen for a fly, Eric

Yeah Gowrie Mt has a powerful DS zone. I went there after a brief trip to Withcott. On this particular day, as far as can remember there was maybe 15-20kt on the coast but at Withcott there was maybe 5kt. I was really impressed by the DS ridge at Withcott, looks perfect, shame it doesn't get strong wind very often. I drove to Gowrie Mt immediately after Withcott, and there must have been 25kt+ there, so much better spot as far as wind is concerned. Also lots of power in the DS zone, but I only flew my foamy Skua as there really is zero landing area for a moldie. The mountain seems to be made from a large pile of rocks, with soil holding the rocks together. Lots of turbulence on the top of the ridge and no small shrubs to land in, so I didn't risk my Bird that day.
Sean.

Thankyou Jeff for the compliments and for putting me onto this forum. Very active and inspiring. Pulled out my Bluto and DLG after getting off the phone from you. Sean and Eric great to see such enthusiasm for DS. I am a few years out of touch with the gear being used but know of the slopes you mentioned. I flew Gowrie quite a few times in the strong winter SW winds. Bloody cold though. This was before we knew of DS. A few houses have been put up on some of the big slopes up here which is a shame but they do have good views though. There was an awesome slope at Mt. Lofty across the road from where I work. Huge lift in SE winds and a backside that made for interesting DS. Trees and the damned chain fence! Housing has left the site unusable now. Very keen now to start flying again. I can't believe that you guys dare to fly the backside of the hang glider ramp. I always wanted to fly the frontside over Tallows with my combat wings. Never crossed my mind the fly a composite there. I'm gonna have to get a bit more game.
Regards, Jesse

Jesse,
I fly around the Marburg range a fair bit, some possible ds spots as well, I'm just not an accomplished ds pilot yet so best to have someone who has the know how to try the spots. Let me know anytime you want a short roadtrip to Marburg.
Mark
