Joined the boys for a session at Shorncliffe late this evening. Again it flew well. I would even venture to say that it handles a bit more crisply than the old one. There's a spot with a 3m wide gap between the clifftop and the fence, and I was doing banked DS type turns onto it and it seemed easier than with the old one.
This stuff certainly is a different animal. It's a hard coat. Very tough. I had the usual range of prangs and in a gnarly place like SC with spiky trees and rocks and cactuses, my other planes get scuffed or torn or punctured but this one doesn't.

Hey Andrew, That burly is really starting to sound like the way to go. Do you reckon it could be covered in sign vinyl to make it a bit prettier?

Good news on your Ozprey build mate, it seems the new covering has just topped it off!! When & where is this stuff available?

Vanders, Karl the Predator is really driving all this, and a good guy to contact about it. "Predator" on RC Groups.

We have just done some testing on blue foam, and it works really well. It stiffens up the foam quite alot, you can break the foam in the sandwich and kink the film but it tightens up when you iron it back down and goes stiff again, almost as stiff as it was before it was broken.

Glenn, in an actual build I reckon it would always be advisable to have a central spar ... even a 5.5mm carbon tube ensures that the wing is going to bend in a curve, rather than crease on one line. That's how it is with my Ozprey and it seems great. I wouldn't like to try it without a central spar as it would be fine until it got a big load and would probably crack/ crease.
Does the blue foam take the heat better than the EPP? Or similar??

It takes to the blue foam just as well as the EPP, but it doesn't have the lumps and bumps. It would be good on a discus launch glider.

For finishing, any idea if this would work: EPP Spackle Spray paint Goop New Stuff I can imagine the paint might not like the goop, or may crack in a crash. But... I remember reading on the NCFM site that they used to finish the Moth fuse by painting it followed by lots of goop - so it might just work. The other idea I had was to use heavily tinted goop under the New stuff? Never tried tinting goop myself but have read of it being done.

Guys this looks pretty interesting. I like your idea Sean of painting it before goop. What about colouring the goop?
There was stuff way back in the past that I knew as micafilm that I think might have been similar in properties.

Vanders, i've emailed him to ask, but no reply as of yet. It does say it is similar in weight and irons on and....is paintable.
Sean, i think if you used a good paint, that is rubbery, it might stay on better after a uncontrolled landing. I was thinking the same thing about the paint. I know you can buy an additive that is used on Motorcycle fairings that makes the paint rubbery, so the flex at high speed doesnt crack the paint. There must be something around that does the same thing, its just a matter of finding it.
My servos for the reaper will be here next week, so i'll hopefully get a reply from Mr PlDaniels on the decision for the film, fingers crossed it will work. it will save a heap of time and save a few $$'s.
Cheers

I know one thing for sure, the new stuff Burrly covering that I have will not go around compound curves. It is described more as a plastic-ply, it is quite hard to fold. On my Reaper I used a little colored zagi/packing tape over the covering and it worked a treat.

kk, just ducked over to the laminating place across the road, i dont think the stuff they had was the correct type, its basically feels like overhead transperancy film once heated. They didnt know of doculam, which i'm now thinking is a brand. Back to waiting on PLDaniels to return my mail. S
