My Electron Ds60 turned up today. reading the instructions i think make it sound harder than it is to put together after looking at the build photos on the tuff planes web page. it doesn't mention it in the instructions, but do you suggest making the end of the elevons on the wings solid or just have it as one big elevon. link to plane : www.tuffplanes.com/Products/Electron60.html

Hi Jase, these type of planes can be a bit harder to build and especially to setup, so follow the instructions as closely as possible!
For the elevons, the only advantage with fixed tips is they're stronger if you cartwheel and won't transmit shock to the servos, but full span elevons are a fair bit easier to build and are probably slightly better from an aerodynamic standpoint, it's all about compromise really. From the pics on the site the elevons go all the way to the tips as standard.

another questions.
which side of the wing do i want to install the ballast from... Top or Bottom.
with my wing there is more (thicker) foam on the bottom and it's rather thin ontop.
should i install the ballast from the top then, or should they be put in from underneith...
thanks

Not sure how a solid foam wing can have more foam on top than the bottom...

it's where the pre cut ballast tubes are. one side is 3" deep, the other is 4" deep. that extra inch is where ballast weight is added into the plane.

Still not entirely sure what you're asking here Jase, but when it comes to gear/ballast installing from the top or bottom is pretty much down to personal preference. Installing from the bottom makes your plane look nicer on top, installing from the top is more convenient, other than that there's no difference really.

Just worried about things flying out the bottom when a few g's from ds is applied. With dad's I cut the hatch into the fibre tape, before applying the Profilm. Leave one side uncut so you have a fibretape hinge. Then I marked around the cut with permanent marker. This is so that I could just make out where the cuts in the tape are, under the profilm. He still has not used ballast yet and the top of the wing is still in perfect shape. Really only need ballast on those crazy days or for ds'ing in 20-25+ knots. I wouldn't cut the hatch through the covering until you really need to.Once you cut the hatch it always looks a bit shabby. Also tends to land much harder with ballast causing more damage.

i ended up putting them in from the bottom.. just in the process now of making dowel plugs and lead plugs.
until my radio gear arrives and i order my servo's, there's not much more i can do to this thing.

quick update on my Electron.... Finished dowel slugs tonight, ordered 2 micro servos and 3 X 24" extension cables tonight from www.towerhobbies.com for $88AU delivered.. if i bought these parts here i would have been looking at $75 / micro servo from a local hobbyshop... fingers crossed this plane is ready for it's maiden flight by the 16th.

Why micro servos?! They gonna have remotely enough torque?
