Don't quote me on this but I thought it was against the law to be using 72mhz in Australia, as emergency services & other authorities use this frequency for various things.

Yellow topped Erwin on the way ;D
As you know I have been agonizing over a radio for this plane. There are lots of opinions. My choice has been narrowed by circumstances. I was able to join the Maleny club as an associated member - Thanks. This however created a radio choice restriction. The club has adopted a restricted member policy for lots of reasons including the owners do not want too many people going in and out of the site. This allowed the club to have a novel system where all members have a unique radio frequency:- no frequency board, no frequency conflicts - great!
But I would like a JR radio and all of the JR frequencies are taken. So go Hitec, Futaba or 2.4.
The main problem with 36mHz radios are shoot downs from other radios on the same frequency. In theory not a problem at Maleny but you are never sure someone in a nearby park won't turn on a conflicting radio and away from Maleny who knows?
The problem with 2.4 is short antennas that are shielded by carbon fiber composites.
So I am left with a Hitec or Futaba radio. Futaba is my pick of these, reputedly very good radios.
My attraction to JR pushed me to discuss radio choice with Chris Callow, 3 times F3D world pylon champion and great bloke. Chris is not arrogant at all and is always happy to help and give advise. Chris has an Erwin 5 and is flying it on a JR DSX9 2.4. If anyone can turn a model inside out and upside down it is Chris. He has DS'd his Erwin and flown it up to a dot in the sky and has had no problems. He said that there is no choice - go 2.4!
Almost convinced I spoke to Mark Kyle of Kyle Communications. Mark is a radio/electronics guru who happens to be nuts about turbines. Those guy fly large fast jets with masses of metal and composite. They use complex radios with 12 and more channels. Guess what Mark uses - Yes 2.4! His opinion - there is no decision anymore, unless you have a significant investment in 36mHz receivers buy 2.4. He has shown me a video filmed by his Dad of one of his $5000 jets being shot down by another bloke at the field turning on a radio on the same frequency. The result was a burnt plastic mould of a jet turbine engine.
Choice made: JR DSX9 ordered.
I realize that this will cause some discussion and controversy but I am prepared to give it a go. My research background draws me to experimentation. If people didn't try new things we would all be free flying or flying kites.
Wish me luck.......... I will keep you informed
Steve

Great news mate, they look like such a nice model. You & Sean will be carving up the skies in no time! I'm sure you'll be happy with the DSX9. I would have also gone 2.4, but I picked up my synth 9XII for a bargain. I'm curious about your comment regarding JR freqs, Can you not use any freq xtal & just adjust your synth module? I've also just joined Maleny & plan on running 36.090 (one of the few freqs left available). Now you've got me worried!!!!

I'm sure you'll get it working Steve, those guys sound like they really know what they're talking about. My objections to 2.4 in carbon gliders is based solely on what I've read, so I can't speak from experience. One day I'll give it a go, I'm sure . But I did crash my electric the first time I flew it at bald Knob due to radio issues, while flying it on 2.4, so that's taken the gloss off 2.4 for me a bit (it works flawlessly in the local park). Most people who fly 2.4 up there have no trouble though, so it could just be a problem with my setup. The XL is going to be one sweet plane!

I'm puzzled about how JR frequencies are different from Hitec and Futaba.

Yes as far as I know all brands of radios can take the full range of 36mhz frequencies. So I thought there's no dif between Hitec or JR - just put in the crystal you want.
Also I have to put in a plug for the Multiplex Coc*kpit SX. Synth radio, amazingly good synth 7ch Rx, and all the features you need for a moldie. Plus, best value for brand new. Best feature is its user-friendly programming. Tweak whilst in the air etc.

Exciting! Hope it gets along with my baby Erwin - it's proven to be quite predatorial.

Steve, I can't remember exactly, but I think my Erwin took a few weeks to get here. It shouldn't have taken that long but it got mistakenly delayed in customs - for some reason they thought it was worth over $1000 and they wanted me to pay duties on it. I phoned and mentioned it was worth less than $1000, they had a look at the customs declaration, saw that I was correct and then sent it on its way .

Guessing the larger Erwin will be well over $1000au. This will push the price up alot.

Sorry about the crap photo. The Erwin arrived yesterday after unbelievable grief from customs. The box had been ripped to pieces by customs and tapped back up - sort of. The wings had been taken out of the bubble rap and just shoved back in the box!! Fortunately it all looks OK. It is shown here just sitting together. Looks great but the build looks a bit daunting. I hope to finish the JW (waiting on servo's for 1 month from Ming) and replace the Duck first

Wow!!! That is one sweet looking plane!!! I hope to finish the JW (waiting on servo's for 1 month from Ming) and replace the Duck first I would contact him about the servos. I've ordered servos from Ming twice before and they have always arrived in 1 - 1.5 weeks. BTW- Glad to see your Raptor flew well after a bit of trimming. Nice to see pics of your plane on the FSD site. Keep up the good work, Jordan
