For those following the Windsock website you would have known that occasionally I like to fly my electric powered S&B Komet. This is the same plane that I did a review on when I first started the Windsock web site and recently flown at Lennox Head.
Picture above: Scarborough, looking north.
My main flying focus has always been gliders, however more recently I have been enjoying the flexibility of having a powered plane in my collection. For a long period I have been running my Komet with a standard brush motor & NiMH batteries, however recently I made the change to a brushless motor and Li po batteries.
I really don't know why I've stuffed around so long to make the change but I can say one thing now - WOW! The rate & speed that I can quickly climb to is very impressive. Depending on conditions I can get up to a very satisfying height and motor around or just cut the motor altogether and glide.
Don't get me wrong, it will never replace my first love (slope gliding), but it really gives me a lot of flexibility to fly in a range of conditions. I guess the great thing is that I can still enjoy the aspect of gliding, the Komet simply allows me to quickly get some impressive height to enable me to glide, loop and roll around.
Within the Redcliffe area I have 5 flying sites which are well suited for flying the Komet for all wind directions (most having ocean views). The best part is that I have a large field with a small slope facing in a Westerly direction only 1 to 2 minutes walk from my front door. Great for the Westerly winds later in the year.
As you can see from today’s outing, I'm trying to teach my daughter at a young age.
I would recommend electric flight for those wanting a little more flexibility with their flying, as if we don't fly enough already. If you ever go electric don't make the same mistake that I made, go brushless/Li po from the start, you won't regret it.
