Has anyone ever been here?
I went when I was about 16 and had a fly of the big gliders, they have two big diesel winches at the bottom of the runway and when I went it cost $5 for a 3 day membership and $3 a flight to pay for fuel etc. best value flying in the world and it was a thrill!!!, anyone want to do it, I am up for doing it again soon would love to take some of you guys out to have a fly of a big glider.
Jay

Hi guys, Here is their website after a long time searching ggc.pikie.dyndns.org/cgi/cms.pydetails as follows: $79 gets you two flights of 20 minutes + $2 a minute after the 20 minutes allowed each flight. If your like me and want to join the club: $50 to join $50 per year membership renewal $205 per year to gliding federation of australia "have to join this no option" $14 per month insurance and club upkeep $400 loan to the club that you get back when you resign. $778 for your first year maybe I should just stick to RC sloping for now. Sure has got expensive since the last time I flew, must be something to do with insurance. I bet some knob tried to sue them. let me know if your interested. Jay

Hi Jay, yes I have. I'm a very uncurrent glider pilot so my Darling Wife gave me a joyride for a birthday pressie about 3 years back. We went to Gympie and met the guys. They're a nice bunch. I had my ride and gave the mem-sahib one as well. Sadly she didn't like it - the circling made her ill. First and only time on a winch launch. We could have thermalled away quite happily so it's not a bad way to go on a nice day. The only problem with Gympie is that as you progress you'd quickly run out of airspace. They don't really do any cross-country stuff there. For that you have to go to Kingaroy I'm told. In any event I'm sticking with model gliders for now! I'm having a lot of fun thermalling the big girls (3m mouldie types) and sloping everything . Ken.

Hi Ken, are you of Indian decent.... strange question but you did call your wife a mem-sahib.... Gliding is awesome shame it has become so expensive. I have heard of races from gympie to kingaroy on thermals sounds like a hard task.

I did a bit of gliding at Caboolture a few years back. I stopped when I figured out it was costing about $180 an hour!!! Launch is via aerotow at Caboolture (more expensive than winch but more height, and great fun) and the soaring conditions aren't so hot so we'd usually aerotow up to a pretty decent altitude and then just glide back down in about 15min, which is why it came out so expensive. I wish it was more affordabe because I'd really love to get into it in a big way. Kingaroy sounds like the place to go but too far for me.

It is a shame it costs so much, just think what you could buy if you spent that moneyon your R/C glider instead!
