Some time ago when my Minij broke up on a bungee launch, Glenn (Zipper) offered to make up a new vacuum bagged wing for it. I leapt at the chance, but opted to go for a Prodij type wing, which uses the faster, more aerobatic MG06 foil and is a stiffer carbon layup (the Minij is an excellent fast and lifty wing but very light).
Glenn and Rick made the wing the same way as their Zipper. High density RTM60 foam core, strong carbon layup, centre spar, spruce leading edge and ply panel under the centre line. But unfortunately the end result was much too heavy for my purposes, and I didn’t buy it.
Glenn then snaffled a fuselage from Andrew Barnes to see if he could make a plane using the wing, but didn’t get around to it.
Recently after the day at Beechmont I retired (and necropsied) the Nemesis after its 7th major prang. I loved that Nemesis – it was my primary DSer and I wanted to replace it with another portable 60”er. But it dawned on me that with my rate of carnage, hollow moldies aren’t up to the task. I remembered how incredibly tough Kane’s Zipper was when I saw it at Beechmont. And I remembered the over-heavy Prodij style wing. It was still available so Glenn and I hammered out a deal for the wing and the fuse, and it turned up last week.
I am hugely impressed. If Jeff Irvin made a wing like this he’d probably throw it away – it weighs 760gm!! But for DS, who cares?! The wingspan is 1740mm.
The fuse looks absolutely great too. Really solid. I didn't realize that it was brand new! I'm really rapt with it. Nice and solid, but sleek. It weighs 240gm, so that’s 1kg without a tail or any gear! This is gonna be a monster!
Not sure what to do for a tail. I have the old Nemesis V-tail (shown in the mockup), but I’d prefer to make it a cross-tail with a fixed fin, like Ezza’s Kinetic 60. I’ll ask Sean to do some calculations to determine the best tail/ control surface size. Here are a few pics:
This Beagle pup was impressed and had to check it out!
I'm calling it the DITZA. (short for DS Bitzer). I'll probably paint it red and yellow like most of my others!
Need some shed time to get this thing together!
