Well, I popped out to the UAV challenge on wednesday to have a look to see what was happening, wow long ride on the GSXR, I tell you they are not made for long rides. I was a little disappointed to only see 4 entries and the QUT team had crashed on morning practice and no replacement airframe. I wasnt until 2pm the first of the "Find Outback Joe" entrants got airborne, but electrical problems forced them to pull out. Another entrant had engine issues and unfortunately I had to leave before I seen the rest fly. So all in all it wasnt too bad, I think they could have some demos of RC there like jets and F3b demos, would have made the wait easier. A couple of photos below, the first the QUT disaster. Second bob youngs UAV, he didnt fly this weekend.

Amazing stuff. Competitions like this really push the technology to new levels.

A friend of a friend was working in Afghanistan on UAV's - looked a bit like the red one, but was more of a delta wing I think, and had heaps more things stickin out of it (radar domes and what not).
Theirs was pretty impressive - he showed me video of it taken through a night vis lens.

A few of us from Boeing planned to enter this year, but funds did not come to pass :-( Hopefully next year we can get something funded from the company to enter.

Does anyone here have the slightest interest in forming a team to make one of these? anyone know of any sponsors who would hand over some cash? If the answer is yes I am quite happy to offer my services with regard to building/flying/searching for the "lost Joe" as posted in this thread windsock.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=techaerotalk&action=display&thread=1121&page=1we could use this for nav and AP project would cost somewhere near $2000 i would think...
