I headed up to go flying at Maleny today and when I got 3/4 way there I realized that when I'd swapped cars with my wife, I left my transmitter in the van.
After the guttural screaming had died down to steady sobbing and I'd stopped kicking the sides of the car in, I decided to make use of the trip to check out Mt Beerburrum.
It's the first Glasshouse Mtn that you drive past, on the Steve Irwin Way. You turn left and drive thru the tiny Beerburrum township, then there's a signposted right turn onto a good dirt road accessing the mountain.
The road climbs a bit to the parking area, but there's still heaps of hill to walk up! It's a fully concreted walking path all the way, and very steep! Takes about 15 min.
The top left me with mixed feelings. I couldn't fly to check it out, but I'm sure there was huuuugge lift on the frontside, which is really steep and faces SE, with no trees around the flying spot. There are enough patches of soft shrubbery and grass to land foamies OK. I think I'd be quite happy to fly the Bat and Reaper there.
Plus, it is DEFINITELY DS'able. Everything behind the lip of the front slope was totally dead, and the backside, covered in forest which was dead still, drops away steeply; but ......
1) There's this big tall fire observation tower smack in the centre of the top. Just behind it is a concrete block building behind it. I climbed up onto the roof of it (a solid slab) and that’s where I’d stand to DS, as it gives you a better view over the little trees.
2) There's a patch around the tower which is pretty clear, but there are lots of small regrowth trees further back and to either side. Also some bigger trees over the back
There’s even a patch of nice soft grass on the top, but it’s gonna be hard getting a good approach to plop into it, and it’s close to the tower.
So in summary, the hill is great for an alternative fun (extreme sloping) frontside location in a SSE to ESE. For DS it looked like it had a record breaking general shape, but whether it will be useable (ie whether you can get a comfortable circle going) is yet to be determined!
