Went to BR this morn for a thermal before the predicted strong wind warning. There bout 8.30 as the fog lifted. So armed with my 'How High' altimeter, I han a couple of launches with an immediate spoiler and landing. Only 2-5kts of wind at best, and could only pull back about 100paces instead of the usual 120 because of wind direction and where the sun was, so not a lot of pressure in the launch. Managed 140m best launch height, tho know much higher is possible. Next flight launched straight into a thermal and a new PB for me-15:54 and 191m max. Next flight was 21:53 from pop-off and , 217m max another PB. Was a great morning- pity I was the only one there to enjoy.

That's excellent Mike. Great to be able to get some real numbers. Need to see how high you can get on a full stretch launch. I'd like you to launch the Escape on a winch too, to see the height comparison.
Sorry I didn't get there!

well done Mikey ;D ;D ;D
it's great you beat your Pb, sorry i couldn't make it, bummer hey, the fog here was the thickest and longest to stay around here on the farm i have ever seen, very eerie.
Mikey you can take off cross wind, just when you feel at a safe height drift cross wind until your bungee is directly up wind then you will get more height.

Another successful day at BR....except for Garth's Starling Pro, which after having held the day's record of about 12min, had a full-on tip stall on launch and spiraled till it dug-dirt full tilt, compleyely destroying it. A shame as this plane got better and better with each repair.
Sean, Andrew and myself flew out the rest of the day, all having several launches...most 140-150m, but as the breeze picked up to 8-10kts, app 160-170m launches on the How High. Sean had a 10min+ flight, as did Andrew, and I had a P.B. on my last flight of 18:47 from pop-off....and dare I say, the longest flight for the day. Andrew and Sean amazed with hand catches at the conclusion of most of their flights, whereas I was happy in landing within 10m of where I was standing. The Espada xl, Orca and Escape all behaved well and went home unscathed.
Have almost repaired my Pike Supreme with 3x 2mm carbon-plate 200mm spars across the break (overkill...I know) and seems stronger than new....and app 60 g heavier. I just couldnt justify $875 for a replacement centre panel!!

Bummer on the Starling Garth. I have to agree with Nige that they are fantastic value and great performers. Sort of like a thermal weight Opus. Those are great heights from a bungee. Sounds like a good day. Good move with the repair. Much cheaper and probably stronger than new. Eric

bummer Garth i think that is one of the draw backs with bungee compared to winch, the bungee is loaded up with pressure for a long time compared to if you lock out on winch you can still jump off the pedal and you only have the mono stretch to deal with, but Garth I'm sorry to hear about your starling, i have folded wings at about 30 foot on a bungee and then it turns into a missile horizontally, looks cool but it's not for your plane, it's trashed when it comes down. good to see you have been fixing your pike mike lol. only 5 more weeks of this mayhem here at work so i will be back out there with you guys more regularly, awsome height with the bungee there boys, should have got Sean to take his winch down and compare with the bungee. 18:47 awsome mike, and so close to the beach! regards nick

Hi Nick, Garth's plane tip stalled as it left his hand...was 'all over red rover' in a split second. Dont think anyone could have gotten off a winch pedle b4 it was destroyed. Was sad to see. mikey

Thanks for a fun day flying off your bungee Mike . I was pleasantly surprised by the heights we were getting off the bungee once the wind had picked up. The wind seems to make a big difference, launches in still air weren't as impressive. With wind it looked like maybe 2/3 of a decent winch launch I reckon? The planes climb at a much lower airspeed than they do on a winch so it is a much more relaxing way to launch. On my first bungee launch I had to hold in quite a lot of down elev compared to my winch launch setting to get the Orca to climb well, and stop it from trying to drop a wing. On subsequent flights with some better launch settings dialled in, it went straight up the line with very little input needed. I was using the camber dial to control airspeed rather than the elev and it seemed to work but don't know if that's ideal. It seems to me like a pretty safe way to launch a 3M model as the aircraft are flying quite slow up the line and not pulling a lot of tension. It seems to need more input to control speed compared to a winch. There's much more time to react if something goes wrong, though that might not be the case with a smaller lighter aircraft. (very sorry to hear about the Starling Garth!)
