Yeah it was a great day, great blokes and a GREAT site today. I've had a double bunger weekend with a great arvo of sloping yesterday, and a big day of thermal today.
Last night after returning from flying I mumbled something to my wife that Nick was winching today, but of course I wouldn't think of going because it would be too much of a strain on our marriage, etc. But she seemed happy about it. Now that is strange, and maybe she's on drugs, or having an affair?? I dunno, but WHO CARES if it means I get to go flying?? Hooo-wee! See ya later Darling!
Mikey leapt at the chance too. Jeff's second car which looks very dead actually died (or went on strike) this morning so I picked him and winches up, and we all met at Nick's place at Wamuran. And all I can say is "Wow!". What a glider shed. We all left feeling that our lives were really missing something big, after spending a while chewing the fat over planes, gear and tools in Nick's shed. It looks like a display for a company that sells RTF glider sheds, including all gear. Jeff particularly looked very concerned and confused. Kept muttering about having to "do something" and how he was gonna read a book about "organizing and getting rid of stuff".
We followed Nick’s 4WD to the site near Woodford and on the way, Nick pulled over to tell us something, and Jeff, gazing out the window at a roughly 100acre smooth flat grassy idyllic turf farm said "Wow, wouldn't it be great if you could fly there!" Just as Nick ran back and said "Well guys, this is the site ...". I think if Jeff hadn't been in a car seat he might have fainted. Nick gave us a run down on ground rules. It’s a very private site; invitation only and stick to the owner’s rules.
While we were setting up Mike pulled out an electric Park Zone Cobra and warmed up his thumbs going crazy with it. I had to have a go. First time I’ve flown an electric. I’m still resisting the temptation, but it’s getting harder.
With 3 winches we had a good half-dozen or more launches each. It was a fairly strong westerly, but there was good lift around at times. Jeff “fell in love with the Europhia all over again”. I had one flight where I was worried I’d lose sight of the Fazo, it was so high, then I landed on 10:03 at 1 metre (timing on my own!).
I felt proud that 2 moldies I’d sold were making their owners very happy; Nick was loving his Fazer, and Mike kept thanking me for selling him his Albatross (which despite being soft-pedalled on launch went beautifully). But I was a bit narked that they both made the planes fly much better than when I had them.
It was a beautiful day, and with the milder weather, nice to be able to stand out in the midday sun and feel comfortable. I took my plunger, so we even had great coffee! It just doesn't get much better than that! (sorry Jeff, I came home with your milk). Jeff reckoned it was a site worthy of a world championship. We all hung around much longer than we’d intended, and went home happy. Mike’s only been flying for less than a year and is a natural. Today probably got him intrigued with thermalling and keener than ever to get a more advanced radio!
