Jeff organized a great day of winch launch practice at Bracken Ridge today. He had his expert mate Brian there who was a wealth of knowledge. Five winch lines spanned the entire paddock. I dunno how many big moldies there were, but it looked impressive. Attendees included me, Jeff, Brian, Vanders, John ?, Ken, Chris H and Sean and we had a few kids there as well One of the kids' bikes made a useful parachute retrieval aid for a while, till the kids took off for the nearest Macdonalds (sigh). Felix, Mark and Geoff (Shorncliffe regulars) turned up for a while too. It was really impressive as we were able to take the vehicles in to the site and it looked almost like a comp, there were so many people, planes and gear (I hope someone will post a photo). Heaps of launches with the big moldies plus some of the guys trying out various smaller gliders from the bungee at times too. Some of the planes included Fazers (mine and Vanders') Pikes (Jeffs and Seans) Europhias (Jeffs and Brians) and Ken's Xperience Pro. I winch launched the Wizard BPV for the first time too. A few close calls here and there to keep the excitement up. Ken nearly landed in the winches and I almost stalled inverted over the pits with a narrow save at ground level. Planes popped off the winch line early a few times to keep us awake. All in a days work really. It really was an excellent, fun, well organized, educational social time. Great stuff Jeff and Brian, well done, that was great.

Totally agree with Andrew here, good atmosphere, crap everywhere, some impressive flying all turned into a great day! I had alot of fun bungeeing the hawk and marks eagle and even managed to get a little thermal and slope action. In between watching the composites on the winch was truly an awesome show ……I can feel temptation taking over me lol. Ended up at the cliff in light easterlies with Gerard, steve, mike, chris, mark and sean all making a show. Light lift led to not a great deal of flying going on…..got that bad I strung the bungee out across the eastern slope and me and mark spent had a bit of fun bungeeing the lightweights. All in all a great day.

Hi Brian,
Great to see you here in Windsock. Those are excellent photos and Andrew is right, looks like a comp was on!! Sounds like fun had by all.
Interested to hear how Sean and Mark(and anybody else), went with their first launches.

Welcome to Windsock Brian Today was just the best! I left this morning early as I wanted to be on time. I was feeling anxious as I had a lot riding on the boys having a positive winch experience. I was also feeling the personal pressure of getting my Europhia launching technique sorted out. Plus I wanted to get cham37 up to speed on flying moldies so that he would have a successful time at Lismore. Well I felt that all bases were covered today. Europhia is launching well - I still have to get the zoom happening. The Pike plus is launching well and cham37 had his first moldie lessons. The winch virgins had a successful time and there were thermals to catch. The day was topped off with Sean and Cham37 dropped in for a shed tour. Coffee and leftover birthday cake topped of a great day. Lads I really appreciate your enthusiasm and love of the sport - looking forward to spending more time with you. Thanks to Brian for the coaching clinic - looking forward to seeing some good flights at Lismore come out of the practice. cheers jeff

I had a great time yesterday! I learnt so much my brain was hurting by the time I got home. Thanks so much Brian for your expert tuition on winching, it really is a thrill, I can't wait for the next outing! I wasn't entirely sure what to expect before the first launch, but thanks to Brian I had a good idea of what to do with the sticks and when. My first winch launch was all-over the joint, and the subsequent ones weren't much better. To me rudder control felt very different on the winch, so I kept over-controlling making the Pike climb in an S-pattern. My last effort was getting there but a lot of room for improvement which I can see will take a lot of practice. I'm really looking forward to the next opportunity to do this again - I keep finding myself thinking about the sight of these big planes climbing vertically on the winch... Thanks for your shed tour Jeff! What an education! Can't wait to get the vac-bagger working now . Sean.

Impressive first post, Brian. Lovely pics. I might have to try that stuff some time.
What is the small glider with the rounded pink tips?

That's Mark's modified EPP Eagle HLG. He flew it later at Shorncliffe in next to no wind, it's one impressive plane, and he flies it very well.
