Hi guys, just got this sim and have had a play on "DS ridgeline" I can usually hit around 400mph plus and just got 520 before the model fails. Using 3m Mistral - heavy ballast.
Obviously it isn't totally realistic. I've only ever done some minor real DSing with foamies and have never gotten a mouldie really into the groove. If anyone else has G5 and has real DS experience what do you think?

Just blew up 5 Pike Perfects and 3 Espadas and a Tool. That's over $22000.00 worth of models Glad its virtual. ;D ;D The Mistral is apparently a Scar F3b and the above models were downloaded from Skipmiller models. I tweaked them a little but they all failed at around the 200mph mark.

Hey Brian,
I've only got G3, which doesn't support DSing so I can't comment on how good the DSing is in G5. The one thing I can say is the atmosphere modeling in G3 is very basic - there's no turbulence or bumpiness at all in the air. There's just a fixed airmass moving up against the slope. For that reason I never felt it was very realistic at simulating slope flying. Also the lift versus wind strength seems far too high. It's good for training muscle memory though.
With only basic atmosphere modeling I doubt how accurate the DS simulation could be, because dealing with backside turbulence is such a big part of DSing.
Most F3B/F planes seem to blow up somewhere between 150 and 200mph. Only a few have gone over 200 - the Aris and Crossfire spring to mind.

Brian I've done it in G4, using the heavy ballasted sloper (can't remember the name). Nah, the DS doesn't feel real at all. The only thing it seems to know is that if you get back up over the crest and turn back, it accelerates. But it doesn't convey the effect of the shear and turbulence, or the increased response rates at speed. The flying spot is weird - way down the backside - you can't launch there - it starts with the plane overhead. If you try to DS the left side of the ridge it doesn't work, but it should given the wind flow and topography. Very lame by comparison with the real thing.

Definately G5.
I can "DS" in about any position l/h and r/h on the virtual slope if I time it right and get the first "loop" right.
Have set turbulance and difficulty to max and allow structural failures. Model fails at around 200/250mph now.
Only a model with span will work, apart from the glider models. eg B-17 will accel a little bit if you time right.
A good distraction for a few hours but I'd better get out and try the real stuff now.

I've tried DS'ing on the G4, and it seems all too easy...... I tried it for real a couple of week ago at Mt Debatable, Gayndah, with a Bee combat wing. The shear layer? if thats what it's called it really brutal, and knocked the flying brocoli box around at the top of the turn. I managed 3 laps, gaining speed, before i clipped a large gum tree, and proceeded to nearly fall to my death retrieving the piece of crap. Should have left it there. But I have given it a go, and now want a friendlier site to try again at.

Damn its addictive, (as a game) just bettered 550mph. It'll be the speed of sound next at this rate.
Anyway when are you guys going to set me straight at a real site?

Get in touch if you're keen to go DSing. We have a few OK sites around here. It's incredibly weather dependant but we have sites for SE, SW, and ENE winds. I'm sure you guys would pick it up real quick!
Sean.

Yeah but Brian what are you gonna FLY when you endeavour to lose your DS virginity??
Probably not a good idea to dive over the back for your first laps with an XPlorer!
You might have to get a FOAMIE!!! Aaaaargh, NOOOO!!!!

It'll be good to see you DSing Brian. But even with your skills I reckon a foamy would be a good idea... it takes a while to learn when the backside is going to hurl your plane into the ground, and when it's working!

But the cruel irony is that big mouldies are much easier to DS than foamies!

Hey Brian, Next four days are forecast good northerlies. Both days this weekend are looking good, for a ds. Sunday being stronger. ;D It would be cool if you can make it and I can help you through your first real laps. Eric

Unfortunately work will not let that happen (as usual). Next time maybe.
