Sean and I were discussing meteorological phenomena when it was raining at the knob on sunday. He had never heard of the Morning Glory at Bourketown Qld. It is an awesome wave cloud that attracts full size gliders and hangliders from all over the world, who soar for 100's of kilometers on the moving cloud front. There is lots of info if you are interested. this is one site to start with: www.cloudappreciationsociety.org/mg1/a search for "morning glory wave cloud" will give many more. Steve PS: there is no relationship between the Knob and this morning glory Thanks for the link Steve! Really enjoyed reading that article, I can only imagine how it must feel to soar on that particular cloud.

Good afternoon guys,
Hope everyone's doing well.
Finally maidened the Moth today. The conditions weren't ideal but I was sick of waiting. There was heaps of gusty wind but not much lift.
My little Wasp went out first and got hammered around by the wind. I taped on all the coins in my wallet but it still wanted to fly backwards. I went around to the back side of the hill and bungeed the Wasp through the shear layer just to see what would happen. Managed one hairy circuit but got flipped into a rock on the second. I'd really like to try out this DS thing properly one day.
I was getting really frustrated with the conditions and almost went home without throwing the Moth. I'm so glad I didn't! The first couple of flights were a bit sluggish. I gradually worked the CG back to the recommended 1.5". The final flight for the day (before it started raining) was really fantastic. It's so fast and smooth! It's really impressive how quickly it'll change direction. It looks unreal when it 'bounces' out of a turn. Can't wait to do a few more adjustments and fly it in some bigger lift.
I'm experimenting with Hyperion atlas digital servos (DS-13TMB) in the Moth and Halfpipe. Anyone tried them before? They were about US$35ea from Windrider. They seemed like a good alternative to the 85MG (I won't buy Hitec servos after my experiences with their HS-55).
Regards,
Jordan

Good news on the Moth, they're a really agile flier, I love mine too. Interested to see how those servos go, don't disregard all the Hitecs mate, I'm really happy with the HS65HB's.

that is a beautiful looking moth there mate, awesome finish, and if anything like vanders sure to be an excellent fast flier too. ps: i heard they have a sudden violent reaction to jap fighters and that you should avoid bungees and big gum trees though

Jordan, sounds fantastic, and good to hear that the Moth performs so well.
Don't give up on the Hitec servos. The HS-55's are hopeless if they get a knock. I'm not a big fan of the 85MG's either - some guys love em but I hate slop. but I've had great success with Hitec servos otherwise. EVen the standard ones outlast other brands of servos I reckon, but the new Karbonite gears are unreal. The 65HB's are so good I think they should be the first choice for everything! Cheap tough and effective! In standard size the HS5475's are digital and Karbonite and quite amazing.

Yeah I went through a lot of HS-55 gear sets before I finally gave up and replaced them all with Bluebird 306BBs. They're better in every respect- More torque, faster, and cheaper. I'm quite a fan of bluebird servos now. I've also used the BMS-373MG, BMS-380 and 380MAX with good results. Some guys rubbish the Bluebirds but they've never given me any troubles. I'm using Spektrum 9 gram servos (the ones that come with the DX6) in my Wasp and they have been great. That thing has taken a real hammering too!
I have to agree that standard sized servos are tough. My mate crashed my 46 size Cap 232 and the fuse ended up being torn in half. Control horns and clevises were broken but the servos (spektrum digitals) are as still as good as new.

Managed to fly the Europhia2k on the winch yesterday. Did the long drive to Redbank plains and contrary to my slope aspirations I was looking at the trees hoping the wind would settle down - it didn't! Yes a bitterly cold day with strong blustery winds. Thinking that if this was a contest day I would be still expected to fly. Managed 5 launchs with my height improving as i got use to the model. Was i a happy man - nothing like a stiff set of wings in a strong breese (I know how much carbon is in my wings ). The winch line was really straining! Managed to catch a few thermals on a day that didn't look promising. Some more writeup and photos.. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10118362&postcount=222cheers jeff

jirvin sounds like quite a flight with an awesome looking sailplane! can honestly say i'm jealous hardly had the time to fly lately but will make up for it this weekend. spent a couple of hours (6 coldies = 2hours?) in the shop and got the bee sealed up and ready to go again after practicing my amphibian assaults, the fling airworthy yet again and the zero racer ready for it's second flight......think i got all the bases covered now. so planning a late flight tomorrow and all day Sunday (just don' tell the better half it's a surprise )

had a quick fly at SC this arvo.showed up around 430 to find mark, bill and steve loitering around.grabbed the fling and leaned into the gale force winds and launched.spent the next half hour carving up the slope in an impressive manner until i got sleepy......i think i may have intimidated bill and steve as they just sat there not flying and ooh and aahing what a day! disclaimer:- winds may have been crap, the fling may be insanely boring, the predescribed carving may have been slooooow figure 8's and the oohs and aahs may have been yawns.batteries not included

I went over to Woody Point (only a few blocks from my place) and flew the Minij from about 4pm. The camber is useful to climb up then when you get well above the trees the lift was even better - got some huge height at times. Then dive down and scream around for a bit. Did the flying between the trees thing for a while and Gerard turned up so we did some fun stuff for a bit. It got light at times but enough for us to have fun with both Ozprey and Minij.
Oh, and the other thing is I SAW GERARD CRASH!!!! THIS IS BIG NEWS!!! Never seen that before. He tried his trick of flying thru the small gap between the trees, road, power line and power pole- you have to dive the plane thru the small gap and instantly bank and turn before you hit the speed limit sign. Scary stuff, and this time he didn't make it ... smack! Big black mark on his Ozprey from the power line. YOU HEARD IT FROM ME FIRST!! GERARD CRASHED!! NYAH NYAH!

Wife and I went to Elliott Heads yesterday. Pitiful winds. Removed all extraneous lead from the Duck, and actually had some fair flights, on and off, as the wind came on and off. Had some pathetic flight-lets too. Highlight of the day was the fish'n'chips. Moved to Barolin slope - even more pitiful. Came home.

Steve (Portfox) mentioned he might do some bungee launches today, so I hooked up with him out at the school field at North Lakes. Poor bloke found a dud servo in his Stepp 3 so couldn't fly. But the kids were all playing OK so we got my planes going. Steve's bungee was about 20 metres of thin surgical tubing plus some shock cord, and about 80m or so of fishing line. Minij was no problem and had some long-ish flights. Then launched the T-Bird - a bit nerve wracking as I've never launched it like this before, but no problems. Lovely floaty flap landings.
Then we decided to get brave and give the Fazer a go!!! But the bungee joiner broke so we decided to use my Hosemonster 25ft one, plus some shock cord, and the long line. It wouldn't stretch as far as the first bungee but the launch was no problems. We did 3 launches and the Fazer behaved beautifully as usual, even a few aerobatics. However it really needs a much longer length of bungee as it runs out of pull too quickly. We only got about 1/2 of the height with the Fazer as we got with the smaller planes.
The only damage was on the last landing when it was floating beautifully about an inch above the grass, settling down and there was a fishing reel sitting on the ground which whacked one dropped flap and popped the servo out of its mount. Easy fixed.
It was a great feeling to have had my first go at bungee launching the 3m monster Fazer and I'm much more confident to do similar things again. (Thanks Steve!). Once it's in the air it's easier to fly than most other planes and you can comfortably turn almost vertically banked with the wingtip a couple of feet off the ground, pull flaps and come down for a good landing approach.
