I was wondering if anyone can tell me what they would recommend as a good learner thermal glider. I have a paddock just behind me that would be great for flying and well it is facing west from the verandah so no good for my Qeen bee and bee so I am looking at buying another glider. I don't want to spend a fortune at the moment and want one that will be able to take a few crash landings so balsa may be out of the question. Does anyone have any second hand ones they are thinking of getting rid off. Here is a photo from the back verandah. this was on a very wet day there is one small jacaranda tree just to the left but other than that it is very glider freindly. looking to the right looking to the left

It is an amazing plane for the price (US$200). Pity about the poor exchange rate.

Big tip from me is buy something used, if it's your first. Lots less heartache, more bang for the buck.

Probably need a little more info.. Are you a builder? Budget? Launch method?
Initially i was thinking the Multiplex easyglider - foam, good for light air slope and thermals. If launch is a problem then consider electrifying it.
Simplest option is probably the great planes fling - ARF balsa, comes with it's own bungy.

launch is not a problem as the verandah is up 20ft then the hill slopes down so plenty of height available. budget wise looking around $200-$300 so I am guessing second hand may be the way to go. I have built balsa before but would prefer somethething a bit quicker to get in the air

yerp i know exactly where you are mate....i used to go to bald hills state school for the whole seven years ae and even lived basically down the road from the sevo station down the road from the school ae......Doesnt the farmer own that land anymore That area would be really good for thermaling........What direction would the school be looking in if you were to look along the railway line, What ever direction it is you would be able to fly at the school on the back oval that they have there....i remember the day they opened it and they told us not to roll down, so u know what every kid did and roll down the will.....it would provide so ansome lift flying on that thing but i dunno if you would be able to go there after school hrs tho.....will have to find out ae mate ;D I might have to come ova one day and have a fly with ya and maybe even venture over to the school and see what they say Regards, Chris ;D

if looking at the first photo where the tallest trees( pine trees) are that is where the school is. The Neilsens own the land they also own the land on the other side of the river where the quarry is. Mr Neilsen passed away earlier this year but the family are still all around. Yes must see if we can have a day in the paddock flying.

I've often wondered if that slope up from the doggies would be flyable in westerlies. Thermalling on the flat, for sure! With something light and at 20 feet, you'd be able to pick up something there.
Small Handlaunch?

Hey steve, Couldnt you have a high start setup sort of thing and have it running out onto the field and walk back the plane onto the hill Get better hieght advantage there aswell and do remember that when i wa goin to school there, there was altof birds flying around in circles all the time (thermaling) Yu would also be able to fly a combat wing there like a Bevo or bee ae....I fly my grandfathers bee at the local beach here at D'Bay....Using the little lift provided by the wind at about 8knots roughly i can fly it there along the step line very well actually and when it is about 10 knots of breeze you can rally get some serious lift off of it ae Te beeis at 640grams and has a opion of putting a motor on the back of it so thats why it is abit heavy.....I will be buying me a bevo when the Aussie dollar is not like expensive as gold and making it really light but not to light but probally around 550grams which will allow it to stay up in really light windbut also be able to fly in srong wind ;D Really love the bevo ;D Regards, Chris ;D
