Do you guys have it? Insurance that is.
I am told that if I get insurance I would be covered if I ask the owner of the land (Council) for permission to fly, as I fly on cliffs off the beach.
I hate council, would you ask?
Regards Nigel

Why ask council for permission to use public land? ?? Unless they have signs specifically saying not to fly....... Insurance is part of most club memberships.

Nige,
I don't claim to have full knowledge of this area. My understanding is that if you join a club you are covered by the MAAA's insurance provided you fly at a registered flying site and provided you are competent and do not fly in a negligent manner which causes damage or injury.
In other words, it's not real simple, however you definitely won't be covered unless your flying site is registered with the MAAA.
That's my understanding, please don't take it as gospel.
Ken.

Even if a member of a club and have MAAA/MAAQ insurance you may still be liable for property and personal damage on public and more particularly non-specified private land, depending on the circumstances of the incident, which can be highly variable as a legal matter. Bottom line is that club membership => insurance is better than none at all, and in fact although club membership fees do seem hi, it is only to cover the insurance terms of its members, basically though it is the most affordable and basic type of insurance offered on such a 'risky' sport available, dont expect wonders from it when you step out of the agreed terms and flying areas covered.

Yep, MAAA insurance only covers you on a registered flying site or private property with the owners permission. Public places you're on your own!

Got to take a few risks in this life ;D Can't insure for everything even if you wanted to..... If you've got millions in cash or investments, go and see a lawyer about asset protection, otherwise, just go and have some fun (but be sensible!)

Yeah Greg (Maleny club pres) said the same thing to me. If we want to be sure that the MAAA insurance will cover us at other private sites, we should get the owner to sign a basic statement saying he gives permission for us to be there. However if it came to a challenge, and the owner verbally said he'd OK'ed it, that would be fine. The statement is useful if the owner became antagonistic and said he'd never said so ... then you can use the statement to prove you did have permission. So in summary, as far as I can see, the insurance will NOT be valid if there's a claim on private land and the owner says he did NOT give you permission to be there.

I'm not proud of it... but I hit my first spectator on the weekend He was standing beside Allans Jeep (that's risky). Anyway I was frantically apologising when he said "They don't have much weight to them do they? Oh well...no harm done..see ya" and walked off! Interesting.

The whole insurance thing is a bit of a worry for me. I joined the Redbank gliding club once but only flew there once for the year, Im not into flat field flying and there inland slope was poor. All my flying is done on the private or public land none of which is MAAA registered. Id like to get insured but if i dont fly on there sites i dont see much point.

My point exactely, that is why I am holding off at the moment.
The way the club insurance is set up I would pay the half yearly premium and only get 2 months coverage.
