Good afternoon team,
I spent a couple of hours mucking with the Wasp around at Mt Arawang this morning. It's still the greatest piece of foam I own ;D. Wind was NNW-WNW 15-20km/h with gusts to 30+. The NW slope isn't very good. Not steep enough but I still managed to stay in the air. It was VERY turbulent but the Wasp did quite well for such a small light plane.
Things I learnt (that you probably already knew)-
Elevator trim- I mucked around with thr elevator trim setting to see what difference it made. Trimming it so that the nose was pitching down very slightly made a huge difference to the speed of the plane. It holds it's speed a lot better now.
Differential- In the Wasp instructions it says to set aileron travel to 15mm up and 10mm down. To achieve this I put in about 30% differential on my radio. I played with a few differential setting and found that reducing it to 15% made rolls a lot faster and more axial. I'm not sure if this has much to do with the fact that my elevons are installed the wrong way around (I put the fatter end in the centre instead of at the tip...oops!). Will fix it in the next couple of days and see if it makes a difference.
Hot glue doesn't stick very well to covering- When I joined the pod/fuse to the wing I used hot glue. I should have cut away some of the covering on the wing so that I was gluing foam to foam instead of foam to profilm.
Climbing trees was more fun when I was a child- Crashed into a burnt out tree about 3m up. I tried shaking the branches but the Wasp wouldn't come down. I climed up and found that the poor thing was impaled on a sharp branch. It pierced the underside of the wing through the covering and all the way through the foam. It left a rather large pimple on the top side of the wing. All the PU/spackle around the hole is intact. No crumbling at all.
Flying with one hand is hard!- I tried a couple of times to catch my plane but I'm too chicken to let go of one of the sticks. I'm thinking about mixing in aileron to my rudder control (so it's kinda like mode 2) so that I can free up on hand when I need it (catching, scratching, and taking pics). Anyone tried this before?
And one off topic lesson
This place has the most shocking drivers I have ever seen- I've had SO many close calls it's not funny. A Commodore spun of in front of me this morning doing 100km/h on a (straight!) wet road. I've seen 3 cars lose control on the wet roads since I've been here. They are also bad for tailgating and cutting you off. My girlfriend reckons it's because we have QLD plates on the car.
Take care guys,
Hope winter isn't treating you too badly,
Jordan
PS- Just got confirmation that my Moth (x2) and Halfpipe are on their way (had to make the most of the shipping charge ) ;D ;D ;D
