Since there was no wind to go on my planned sloping expedition today, I worked instead then went to Bracken Ridge mid arvo, keen to see what I could do with bungeeing various moldies. First I gave the 2nd hand Albatross a few hand launches, embarrassing myself by finding that I had the rudder servo reversed. After that it flew nicely!
It was my first time bungeeing the Nemesis and I had high expectations of it. First I tried the standard tow hook position, but the plane seemed to stall on launch, then not get a lot of height, so I did what a few people have mentioned - made a long hook from wire, looped around the main hook and running a few inches forward. Had to put a zigzag in it to give it rotational stability, then taped it with bi-di tape. Jeez, did it launch then. Then I tried a launch setting with some camber, and that improved things even further. I must have done 20 launches with it this arvo, sometimes seeing how many cuban 8's I could do before landing (around 8) sometimes seeing if I could hook lift - the longest flight was around 3 minutes.
I also tried the same method with the Albatross and it launched nicely - nowhere near as much height - but then it glitched dramatically, fell out of the sky and I thought it was a goner but it came good and I made a quick landing. I'm just having no luck at all with those Hitec Superslim servos. When the fuse is pointing to me it just cuts out. I would have thought being in a glass fuse, this one would be fine. Hmmm.
I also launched the Fazer, but I made a much longer bungee by adding the 6mm shock cord bungee that Andrew Barnes gave me. It's quite long and I doubled it up and tied it onto the Hosemonster. This gave heaps more stretch. With this combined bungee I firstly tried the extended hook, and it was sort of OK, but came off the line early. So I ripped off the extra hook and used the normal winch hook, and hey presto, she went up much more like a winch launch. Only about 1/3 the height but still nice.
But the Nemesis gets the prize for the most excitement. It was more fun to fly - even got some hand catch landings. Now that I'm confident with it I can launch it in smaller parks closer to home.
