I was feeling rather knocked about due to a major stuffup with work yesterday. This morning I got today’s preparation done and I had the car packed to head back for field work but it was a lovely E breeze so I ducked over to the beach for a very quick fly. Zipped the Nemesis around in the good lift for 10 mins or so – it was really smooth and nice. Did some landings between fiddling with settings and had just set full span aileron and launched it – tried a few rolls and it seemed really nice – then the Nemesis stopped responding. I held the radio way above my head, but no response – the Nemesis cruised along the beach then turned gently downwind, describing a gentle arcing dive and cracked into the trees.
When it crashed I realized my mobile was ringing. Despite my recent drama with the Wizard (when I had the phone held in my hand with the radio) I had the mobile in my pocket due to force of habit.
I still can’t quite believe it.
A) I really didn’t expect that the phone in my pocket would have been close enough to totally lock the radio out. I've had plenty of phone calls when I've been flying – the guys at SC regularly see me take a call and chat to my wife asking me to come home soon!! I’ve never had any lockout problems until the incident with the Wizard the other day.
B) I can’t believe that it stayed locked out when I was holding the radio up, well away from the phone. It must have taken a long 6 or 8 seconds (maybe more) from when it stopped responding till when it crashed which I would have thought was plenty of time.
When I picked up the broken Nemesis it didn't look too bad except for the nose tip being broken off, but on closer inspection the wing tips are a mess really. One side very mushed, the other side less so.
Obviously I’m really cut about this – it’s too much! I’m having a really bad run just lately. There’s something weird about this mobile phone problem – the more I think about it I am sure something’s changed as this problem has only recently been an issue.
When I got back I switched on the Tx & Nemesis and tried dialing the mobile to see what happened. If the phone is fairly close (5” or so) from the radio it cut out, and when I separated them it took about 4 seconds to come good again. My wife’s phone does the same thing.
