Hey guys,
For those of you with some knowledge, I'm considering getting a GWS receiver for my ugly experiment, just so I can give my friends/family a go at flying something sorta safe as my "good" receivers are in my good planes.
What I'm trying to work out is, what sort of crystals go in what sort of receivers. I have an idea that pico receivers require micro crystals, and naro receivers require standard servos.
Is this correct? Because if I can't get a crystal for my channel, then it sort of limits my options, unless you guys can point me in a direction to find a cheap 36.050mHz crystal to suit either.
Cheers, Callun

Hi Callun,
I can't help you with the GWS receivers, but I just bought a Corona RS610 receiver from rcHobbyBoy.com (formerly ozhobby.com) to put in my Weasel. Word on the street is that they're better than the GWS receivers (apparently they're a full range rx, instead of the reduced range of the GWS receivers). The rx costs $22.90, you need a GWS micro crystal which costs $9 and the shipping is $4.20, so the overall cost including shipping is $36, pretty good I reckon. They're pretty small too, weighing about 7g. If you're interested I'll let you know how I get on with it.

PLDaniels up in Charters Towers has some micro and standard GWS xtals. He's clearing out his GWS stock, so I'm not sure what frequencies he has left - www.pldaniels.com/rcshop/

Thanks Gotrek. I surfed the old net and kinda came to the conclusion what I needed. I picked up this receiver: pldaniels.com/rcshop/frame.php?vp=GWR6NII36 and I believe I need to get a "single conversion crystal", which I believe I can get from nitrodude.

How do the Corona receivers stack up? Are they as good as they are made out to be?? While my JR receiver is drying out (and hopefully survives) I am looking at cheaper alternatives, while keeping my JR gear for my powered models.
Any fedback on the GWS or Corona range of receivers would be appreciated.

Jim we recently bought a $34 4Ch Corona scanning Rx for the little wobblymatic experiment sloper (which flies really great BTW) and soon had trouble with it locking on to a signal from two JR Tx's, then it got worse and wouldnt work at all. It started to play up after I accidently turned off the Tx before the Rx. While it worked- about an hour in total, it seemed Ok. Only other complaint is the very thin and weak receiver wire.
Perhaps we were just unlucky, but the shop should replace it if all goes well.

Sean's been using a Corona Rx for a while and likes it. Even at Bald Knob which is one of the worst spots for interference it seems good. David of Sailplane.aus has been selling lots with many used in expensive moldies, and apparently no complaints so far.

i have a RS610II on the way, the price was "right" so i guess i will find out in due course. Hopefully it isn't a "friday afternoon" build. I was just curious to hear other's view on the subject.

Hi Jim, we met at Mt Mee when you were trying to get your plane down. Please don't take this the wrong way, it's just that JR 610 receivers don't work at Bald Knob. They all glitch extremely badly. I'm not saying they're a bad Rx, they're fine. Just don't try to fly at that one hill with one or it'll likely end in tears .

Ken, thanks for the tip. What receiver would you recommend?

Hi Jim,
seeing as you asked... (people must be getting sick of hearing me say this)
Schulze works well (i.e. is effectively glitch-free) for everyone at Bald Knob.
I use only Schulze (crystals) or Multiplex (synth) there and they're both excellent. I have used Hitec Electron 6 and won't again. I've also used JR 7xx (non PCM) and won't again although there are others who fly there successfully with them.
I definitely DON'T recommend JR PCM receivers for there. Everyone I know of who has tried them at Bald Knob has had a terrible time with glitches.
Greg Roper, the club President, uses Hitec slimlines very successfully, but I don't think you can buy them anymore.
There is nothing wrong with the JR 610 receiver you've bought. It should work just fine everywhere except Bald Knob.

I fly JR RS70 PPM and RS77 PCM synthesising rxs at Bald Knob and they usually don't glitch - but I have had two incidents where I lost control for a second or two when near the towers - I do fly there a lot mind you. Never had any probs with them away from Bald Knob.
I have one Corona RS610 and it performs well at Bald Knob, has never given me any problems and very rarely if ever glitches. It is not synthesising, BTW. Sounds like the synthesizing Coronas are less reliable.

I guess having a JR610 and a Corona RS610 (on the way) I should be covered until I can save my pennies. I was curious as to the reliabillity of the Coronas due to their $25 price tag, and my abillity to find trees. As yet i have not venured to Bald Knob, nor do i see the journey in the near future. My flying is mainly restricted to Shorncliffe, Mt Mee and my club field at the moment.
Cheers for the input though, it is appreciated

I use JR RS70 also, and very rarely have problems at bald knob or elsewhere.
I think the which receiver doesn't glitch, or 'which reciever is best' questions/comments/facts are a bit like the old ford vs holden debate.................
