When you stick strapping tape onto itself you need to remove the anti-stick layer so it grips strongly to itself. Recently on this forum we were discussing methods. Some people like me always sand each layer of tape with fine sandpaper, and others wipe it down with solvent such as acetone.
I did a quick test, and stuck 2 long pieces to my laminex bench. One one I sanded the middle third, and on the other I rubbed the same area with acetone. Then stuck another length of tape over each one, rubbed it on, and left it for half an hour.
Each top piece was lifted off using slow traction. Both methods worked similarly. I was suprised how well it stuck where nothing had been done, but you could feel the grip increase substantially over the sanded and acetone wiped areas. I couldn't tell the difference.
On that basis I reckon I'll switch to acetone, as it is quick and it avoids creating sanding dust. When I've used acetone in the past I expected the top of the tape to feel a bit more tacky when the antistick was removed. It didn't, so I surmised it hadn't worked. But obviously it does work well.

Hi Andrew Do you have to make sure everything is covered fully because the acetone would eat the foam? I was thinking of doing a but together tape job on my new plane. Nigel PS: I have paid for and awaiting delivery a prototype Ozprey from Gerrard

Nige, no the acetone doesn't affect the foam. I just checked again, to make sure, poured heaps on a bit of scrap EPP and rubbed it for a while but it was fine. Not sure how it would go with white or blue foam though.
You'll love the Ozprey. When you said you were looking for something a bit faster, I was thinking of the Ozprey. Great for coastal slopes.

Cool, I saw how your plane carried it's momentum behind the trees and that was all the proof I needed.
I will do that test on the foam other than EPP.

Going to be a sticky mess, I think. Styrene won't stand for it.
These results surprise me. I'm thinking about the amount of plastic that rolls up off the tape when you sand it. Maybe I've been removing more than just the release agent layer? But the extra advantage I noticed was that thin CA would actually go in, through the fibreglass, into the foam. Was handy when I tried to toughen a particular spot. But for overall toughening and covering, it's sounding like the acetone may be the way to go. Tidier too.
