I'm still smiling picturing that Ezza! On the positive side Rossco will have learnt heaps from you and your infectious enthusiasm will have given him lots more motivation now. On the downside, now that you've hooked him on DS he won't be able to concentrate on work, or think about anything else now ... should be ashamed of yourself Ezza ...

The world speed glider record has been broken again - Spencer Lisenby in the US upped his own record to 313mph (503kph). More info here: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=803343Hills like Norco in California at the moment are getting their strong Santa Ana winds, making ideal conditions. Another note about Friday - the "scary" hill Sean and I went to would be the perfect place to do a bungy launch, to get the plane high and up into the lift. We've never done it before - don't know what sort of hook etc to use on a foamie (or on the Bird) but I expect we'll find out. Also, up at Bald Knob, Sean shot up extremely high at one stage from DS speed (punched out, as they say) so I got him to do a straight-on dive back to us, and he got 114mph in the dive!

Yeah bungies are fun. I used to launch the M60 alot this way and it would always go off at about 100mph. This gives an easy 100m of hieght. Sounds spectacular as well. You can actually just tape the hook on right up by the nose or just a few cm's back. Usually bend a wire so there is a down turn at the front to hook on the bungy then some zig zags or an L bend at the back end to wrap some fibre tape around. If you come down on Wednesday I can show you, or even lend you a bungee. I got the bungee from www.aerofoam.com/hosemonster.htmlSome of the best looking ds sites are probably going to require bungee launching.

Eric, just been looking at the Bungee page you mentioned above. In your opinion which would be the best to buy out of the bungees listed on that site? I like the sound of the "Complete 2M. High Starts". Also, Modelflight sell the surgical rubber tubing for $99 but it doesn't say how long. Lastly, this looks OK and quite cheap: www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXE636&P=ML

I got 100ft of the 3m bungee more a catapult style. 1 is 50ft long and 2 25 ft lengths. The 50 ft one is awesome!! We found that the weasel starts fluttering around 88 mph. You have to alot more walking with the longer lengths. The short ones can give a nice quick 'twang' launch, to get you up and over objects, or if the lift is too lite you get a bit more flying time. The end of each length has a heavy duty key ring, so I fitted a shackle to hook onto fences etc,.
50 ft of 3m rubber, gets you 100mph with a 60 inch foamie, with a fairly decent stretch.
I have launched the Pike off the short one but it really needed a little more. I would like to try the Insane bungee or Mega Insane bungee although it might tear the wings off!! ;D You can have a play with my bungee setup and it might help you make up your mind. It is a little scary though. I'm not sure but I think those other setups might be a bit lighter than what you are after, not sure really. I have seen a guy at Lismore launching 2m balsa with surgical tubing and about 100m+ of fishing line. It got him enough to hook some thermals in a flat paddock.

Sean,
Well done with your Bird....133mph is not far off my best with the Bird. Think I have 153. I really need to get out and fly more....just waiting on Opus which land in Sydney tomorrow, I have an MCT.
As for the bungee tubing, it can be purchased alot cheaper. I was looking into it a few months ago for someone and will check again and let you know.

The planes. Misleading shot - the Skua is 48", the others 60". Sean are you sure its a 48" I would bet a new foamy kit that its the 60'' in this pic, going by relative scale... What did they call them, with the thinner wing profile, S15? Cant remember.

Thanks for the bungee tips Ezza, sounds like the 3M rubber is the stuff to get, will have to have a look at yours next time we meet up. Thanks Andrew . Very jealous re the Opus! Look forward to hearing how you get on with it. Steve, yep she's 48", definitely not the 60" S15. I think the camera angle is making it look bigger than it really is, the others look clearly bigger than the Skua in the flesh. Sean.

Eric, Thankyou sooooo much! Made my week, year, and many flyin adventures to come!
Ill have to talk to you later about my new DS machine! I meet up with the plane builder (full size) I was talking about and have a head full of info, and a new model to build. He has some very good ideas and improvements for us, and an aircraft manifacturing shop to boot.
I have just arrived home, although am thinking of another trip down already to test the new terminal velocity of the stryker, as i have hopefully solved the elevon flutter issues.
OK... long story short, met up with Ezza, had a great time, and flew aallllll day. Even tried some spots, although fairly tame, new for him. Ezza DSing in some very hairy spots scared the crap out of me first, although that was well overcome after he got into a good site, and moreso after i got the balls up to dive to the dark side myself. "Big sky" was sure an experience! Some, although not all, Highlights; -Flying till you cant see which way your plane is pointing (in ezza's case... till you cant see your plane at all) -Hitting a super thermal that 5 egals came from every direction to ride in. -flying the JW mode 1! scary, my left hand just had to copy my right, and i was ok. -"power lines" the site. guess what happened! doh... -flying "combat" with a full size glider... i think there was some footage of that. -thowing my plane straight at a line of trees hoping to get over and not dive into the rainforrest! Took me about 10 tries to get the balls up to dive for some speed, then pull up over the tops. -the scenery! -and of coarse, DSing!!!!!!!!!!! Fun, fun!
Thanx again to Ezza, and hope to do it all, and more again soon.

Yep, DSed the stryker. It does it, although it wont ever be terribly fast i feel. It seems to need a tiny circle to have effect and on top of that, its roll rate is way to fast. Through the turbulance as you dive in on the backside, it can pretty much come out at any random roll angle. Too many inputs to keep up the speed.
Made some modefications while i was down there, and got a lot more speed, and better lift out of it too. Rounded out the nose edges, and added small winglets. I would estimate an extra 4" or so of used wing.
I have some modifications to make to stop the flutter, (elevons probably slap 90 deg at high speed, scary!) and if this brings the terminal dive velocity up, then it might have a hope... but i doubt it. As is, we estimated about 120kph out of a dive. (conservative i feel)
It hit me once, and drew blood. Just touched me with the new beer box & bi di tape winglet and left a thin line across my back. Cut my corner past a bush on the bottom of a big dive, and the oustide wing lifted without time to react. Plowed straight into the ground behind me, bounced, and fell of the edge of the cliff. I didnt even have time to realise that i was still flying it till i brought it back up and past. Grass was fluttering off it everywhere, and we had a great laugh, although i did see the very serious side of flying it that close to myself on the edge of a massive cliff.
"good day's flying" ...The most amaizing day flying with Ezza, although a great week flying! Would have notched at least 20hrs up on the stryker. (as well as some big dints)
A couple more things i forgot... I flew the foam comercial F27c stryker i made the coreflute version from, and it SUCKS! Well, it flies, and is a bit more slippery, although it tip stalls badly, crap lift, and is a wet bag inverted! Took me hous of carefull covering too. ... and Gerard... the micro servos did not last. 2nd landing, on 1 foot, cussiony grass, at near zero ground speed, with just the slightest nose down dump its ass, stripped one. I now like my coreflute stryker all the better. And wont pull it down for parts as i had near planned to.
Still grinning Ezza!

Yeah me too Rossco.
We have alot of good slopes for Northerlies. I think it is extra good when the wind is NE like the other day. Was a huge day indeed!!
I look forward to seeing what you come with for your new plane.

You're not wrong Ken! Looks like a real rollercoaster ride! Awesome speed for an HP60 though.
