Another option is the NCFM Moth, cheap to buy & you can fit the optional ballast tube. Certainly not going to be as quick as the Reaper but I've seen mine in the hands of Sean & it certainly has potential. Although it is a fuse based design, but I've strengthened up mine with some CF strips, heaps of cross weave tape & 4-5 coats of thinned goop during the build, I've driven it into the ground at speed a few times now with no damage. www.northcountyflyingmachines.com/moth.htm

Yeah the CF strips in the fuse are amazing, hey! I tore the nose off my Ozprey really easily at first ... but with the strips ... well, OK, I admit I've still torn it off once or twice, but it's been in huge explosive crashes only!

well i'm not sure what time, got to swing some spanners friday night right thru until the jobs done.providing i don't fall into a coma afterwards should be around 12ish. as for the slope it all depends on the wind which is.so far it's not looking good but may just come through with the SE'ers due on friday that may just carry on through the weekend, fingers crossed. probably best bet is pm your number and we'll play the rest by ear on friday.

Having re-read this thread and having had a bit of a think I'm inclined to recommend: Drum Roll ... (he he!) a JW! I think Ezza is spot on. They're an easy build, they're easy to tune and easy to fly and they carry energy reasonably well. As I've said on this forum many times, my Bat didn't fly well because I built it wrong. I am indeed a huge fan of the Reaper and I don't believe it's any more difficult to build than anything else. The instructions are good, just follow them. There are plenty of us who can help with setup if that's going to help you. The thing that swings my vote as an ab initio DS trainer to the JW is that it's easy to fly and it doesn't accelerate as quickly as the Reaper, which actually makes it easier to learn DS with. If built standard it will also fly in lighter air than the Reaper which is helpful for learning too. Whatever you choose you'll do fine as long as you go out and fly and keep flying, fixing, flying, rebuilding, flying, replacing until one day someone comes up to you and says - Gee mate, that's awesome! (hasn't happened to me yet but I'm staying with the process ).

You won't be dissapointed. They are a very well behaved foamy. The nose can snap off in a bad crash but just glue in a couple carbon spars when you repair it. Eric

Equal travel up and down. Fly it nose down and fast......Have fun!! Yes I still have my old beaten up JW. Goes great. Very easy to fly. Excellent inverted and even thermals well. Ds'es like it's on rails. Eric

Yeah look my slant is really strongly towards durability. If you crash as often and as badly as I do, and don't like being in the shed fixing, then you want a really really tough plane. But if you're an accomplished skilled flyer, you can keep a more breakable plane going for longer. For me the Bat has been unbelievably tough. Last time I crashed the Bat DSing at the Hump, the impact triggered off the early warning earthquake system and they evacuated Peachester and Maleny as a precaution, until the tremors subsided. But amazingly, I was still flying, albeit with a few wrinkles in the Bat. That's how good it is. It's been a sizzling performer, but since the heavy rebuild it's been more of a DS'er. Not such a crisp DSer as the Reaper but the speeds are right up there. I always want to have one so that if I go to try flying on top of the Glasshouse Mtns or somewhere really rugged like that, I have a plane that's gonna tell me what the lift's like, it can DS the same big circuits like the moldies and hang onto its speed as well as anything, and I can land it on solid rock, and all is good! The Bat is a great tool ... unfortunately mine's pilot is just an "old tool".
