In my quest to get some winch practice in before Lismore I have been exploring possible venues.
Andrew gave a great report of yesterdays visit to the old tip - great afternoons flying even though i didn't get into the air. Later found a dud weld in my lipoly Tx battery pack - could have been a real disaster. Andrew is doing well on the winch - Fazer flys a treat. Nicely set up for thermal turns. Anyhow the tip looks good - room for a full winchline and plenty of flying space.
Today went to the Thunderbirds club at brendale to say hello. Morg has mentioned here on Windsock previously. I contacted the pres (Morg was away) Barry from Indoor and arranged a winch session this arvo.
On Sunday mornings the gliders/electrics get full range of the field and in the arvo they work in with the powered guys.
I can see that a winch will go the full diagonal of the field in the morning and in the arvo length is limited to about 150m. I managed a few late afternoon flights and was able to work some bubbles of lift ..still getting accustomed to the Europhia's handling characteristics.
I have decided to join as an associate ($35) as it looks like a field that i can fly my fast electrics at. The lads seemed supportive of the winch and gliders in general. Some regulers from the slope crowd plus a few electirc cresant wings flying around.
cheers Jeff

What's the Associate membership all about? I gather it's for when you are already MAAA registered through another club, but want to join a second club. Right?
No flying for us this weekend, but we made a start on the kids' Slope Monkeys.

Usually club fees without the insurance. Some clubs also offer distance membership (limited use) at a reduced rate. cheers jeff

Does Associate membership give you only use of facilities, or also voting rights etc?

Abdullah, you're gonna need some big high sky for that R72! Keep an eye out on this forum - I'll post if I'm heading for a slope suited to the SW winds.

Sean and I are planning to get out for some DSing tomorrow. This assumes the wind is good and is SW. First choice is Wild Horse Mtn and we're planning to meet there around 11:45am. However if it's a bit more like WSW then we'll probably head for Dayboro instead. Hoping to get some higher PB's on the radar gun. Anyone welcome to come along if they'll hold the radar gun for a while!
I'm ducking out to the shed to knock up a new fin for the Reaper which has a newly replaced fuse and boom. Hoping to get it glued in and CG balanced for tomorrow. I'm not so keen on landing a moldie at Wild Horse so the Bat and Reaper will be the primary weaponry. Anything over 120mph with the Reaper will be a PB for me. 113 for the Bat. Sean's happy to risk his Bird so if the wind's good he'll be aiming to increase on his PB of 167mph.

Abdullah it looks pretty certain that the winds will be SW, which limits the sites considerably. You'll really need a place with pumpin' lift for that machine. Not easy to organize in SW's. The places we fly SW are pretty rough really.
My Rrrrrreaper is Rrrrrready!

Wish I could make it. Got too much work to do unfortunately. Could maybe make it on Sunday but wind is swinging more south. Seabreeze shows strong winds tomorrow up your way and almost nothing down here. Strange. It was surely howling this morning though. They didn't predict that. Best of luck and be sure to post your speeds in the new Aussie ds thread; www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=907821Eric

Fingers crossed for tomorrow. It's blowing a gale up here now. Interestingly we've been getting really strong westerly winds almost every night for the last week but it always dies down in the day.
Ezza and Abdullah - it's a shame you guys can't make it, but if the wind is good on Sunday I'd be keen to head out again. I reckon we'll have a good day tomorrow but personally I'm not expecting PB-setting winds.
