A friend has a Easyglider and I was thinking of getting one or a Cularis or a Spitit 100 or......I am so confused . I want a plane that i could get up into thermals above the hills down here. So I am not sure weather I would need an engine on it. Has anyone had any experience with this type of flying who could help me? Nigel

hey i am in the same shoes as you mate but from what i have found is that you need a glider and a high start.....here is a link to a USA site where it has got a lot of planes to choosae from ;D It also deponds on how much money you want to spend on it aswell and if you want to build it as a kit form or buy it as ARF....I am most likly going to be getting a kit and building it up myself so that if a mishap happends i know how to fix it and not sit there for hours trying to figger out the stuff Where about will you be flying the plane at

Hello nige Not completely sure of what your requirements are here. I have often used an electric powered thermal glider to climb high and give me access to high slope sites.
Warning a little OT...IIRC Jane (the better half) had the benefit of sharing our first "romantic" weekend away with a 2 metre glider soaring above the cliffs down the south coast of NSW.
I needed the opportunity to reinforce - where I go so do my obsessions - she had her first lessons on a buddy box that weekend. Yes it was a romantic weekend to remember - lots of soaring above the hills.
BTW easyglider with motor is good. I did pickup that skyboyken was thinking of selling a Calaris
cheers jeff

Thanks Chris and Jeff I will be flying in and around the hills here in the far North Coast of NSW when there is no wind for sloping at the cliffs at the beach. Not sure if there is enough room for a histart winch, that is why I was thinking one with a motor. I imagine I would need 30 - 50m of clear low grass ground for the winch? I did see that skyboken had a Cularis for sale/

nige if you don't mind building a kit the electra is a good choice in my opinion.....never put an engine on but built mine super light and she's a real gem, first flight at pottsville i was able to thermal on the beach.

Nige, I'm no expert but I have the Fazer, have been to the thermal comp and seen the serious guys etc. Like a lot of the RC flying scene, there are so many variations on planes, all with some benefits. You can thermal anything if you can hook into a strong enought thermal. Proper winches need more like 100m+ of space and it's not something you do just for an hour or so as the setup and packup is significant. Decent winches cost $1000 or so. Bungeeing is quicker and exciting if you have a good bungee and extra line length to suit the plane. Perfecting winching and bungeeing with a larger plane is a science in itself.
So from one extreme you could spend 2 grand on a top performing moldie and winch it up. Winching gets huge height and the big 3 meter planes are more efficient, and are easier to see when they're a long distance away, so you can roam the skies further and have more chance of getting a thermal. Or to the other hand you could just buy a cheap DLG plane, even like the Canterbury Sailplanes Eagle and quite possibly have a lot of fun hand launching it and once you find a thermal it would do the job. The molded DLG's are more expensive but more efficient. Vanders got a bewdy for next to nothing recently. Everyone seems to be raving about how much fun DLG's are and how they thermal them in parks etc.
If you do want a big plane. keep an eye out for thermal moldies that come up 2nd hand - they're the best value!

Thanks guys. I have a Fling and a DLG for the park already. My future choice needs to: *Thermal *Bungee or motor to get it up ( this is the hardest decision) *2m -3m span or more ( easy to see) *$300 limit ( I will eventually get a mouldie) *Forgiving in bad in unforgiving sites landings (foam sounds good)
Have thought of the following:
MPX Easyglider MPX Cularis Great planes Spirit 100 CMPRO Discus CS ARF Blejzyk First Plus
Has anyone got a second hand plane for sale that is not listed on this site?

here are some thermal planes that i have been looking at....here is the link www.skybench.com/slnost.html#olyII and at the top is a link to the second page.....they are all kits to build but hey it will keep you occupied when you have nothing to do ;Di will most likle geting a plane from here If you were going to choose from your list i would choose the Great PLanes Spirit 100 ARF just because you have flaps, alerions, spoilers and more.......it would be the best choice but you would have to get a bungee which is about $100

Thanks everyone for some good choices and advice. I am leaning towards the Cularis as my LHS has one which is an instant fix. I will still be open to options though.

That is a great site Sean. Lots of choices and an impresive layout. Do you think the price on the top of the list is all you need to pay for a full plane excluding the electrics?
