I've never used hot glue but I have used masking tape and epoxy on servos in the wings of my composites. It works well - I had to pull one of the servos out of my Bird to replace a broken control horn once - after cutting away the top masking tape it was tough pulling the servo out, but with some effort it did come out! I've read you can use lower tack masking tape (green or blue) to make it come out a bit easier, I just used the standard off-white stuff.

I have the low tack stuff you are talking about and it has a number of uses for different styles of models, particularly surface finishing, it would be perfect for servo wraps. This is good stuff that releases beautifully without leaving any emulsion behind; 3M Scotch safe-release painters masking tape #2070.Its available from the big hardware stores.

I have just purchase a tube of Goop-marine from Noosaville SportsPower (ask for Trev). They may not have it in stock but he can get it in 24 hours from the importer. Steve

I dropped into the metal recyclers at Clontarf today, asked if they had any lead, and they directed me to a pallet loaded with the stuff. All sorts of bits, old and new, $1.20 per kg. I only needed a bit, but couldn't help myself and got all this stuff. It's 13kg all up! But enough to keep me going for ages and to share around. Each of the sheets is a different thickness. I can use the solid lumps for pressing-things-weights.

I'm looking for whatever alcohol product you guys use to clean down packaging tapes etc (no I'm not going to waste a good vodka).
Where do I get micro baloons/ cotton flock etc for mixing with epoxy?

the alcohol product i use is automotive wax and grease remover (non aerosol type!!!).normally use for prepping panels for paint so doubt there world be a better product.care must be taken when using as it will creep under tape and dissolve the glue though. a good brand is K & H and is only about $14/L at repco.

I WOULD use my bottle of isopropyl alcohol (Isocol I think - had a lime green bottle and a crocodile on the label, or something) but I can't find it. So I use metho.
I know some people save the sanding-dust from balsa to make their lightweight fillers.

Mark, despite what people say, I am suspicious that the release agent isn't removed by solvents. I think it's a thin film of plastic. When I've rubbed it with any type of solvent it seems to look just as glossy. I always sand it with 150 grit or so. Get into a routine that as soon as you lay down one strip, sand it immediately, or you'll forget some. The process of sanding presses it in and sticks it down too. Dust it off (unfortunately sanding makes lots of dust that sticks to your Super 77.
With the epoxy and cotton flock, try a decent marine shop - the one at Scarborough has a wonderful selection of this stuff. See if you can get the 5minute epoxy in the bigger bottles too (about 125ml each I think?) - it's a must-have, IMO. Most stuff on models can be fixed with either CA or 5-minute.

I did not realise people would try alcohol to remove the release layer from the filament tape. When you sand it, there's quite a lot of rolled-up plastic stuff to brush away, and 3M77 etc seems to then penetrate well, and so can other glues if you sand really hard. I wouldn't trust alcohol to do that.
But what about the packing tape? Is it OK to clean that with alcohol before applying repairs etc? Or does it have a plastic layer too, that needs to be removed?

I'm looking for whatever alcohol product you guys use to clean down packaging tapes etc (no I'm not going to waste a good vodka). Where do I get micro baloons/ cotton flock etc for mixing with epoxy? I've had success with acetone, after experimenting with it as a release agent remover and comparing results due to wear and tear, I'm not bothering to sand down the bi-di tape again or the packing tape. Sanding can certainly take the guesswork out of it if, but attention to detail and being thorough makes acetone work well too. Marine chandleries sometimes sell different grades of micro ballons, as do boat builders. Right now I am trying a product called NHP super light micro fill model filler, designed for aeromodelling, balsa and foam. Its lighter than the household Kwikset type light filler, and promises to have a closer bond and better properties. You can mix water, PU, dope or epoxy with it. Some hobby shops stock it. Sorry vanders I don't know about the cotton flocking. Edit; aeromodelling epoxies- Hanger 9 make grades of epoxies from 5 minute to 30 minute, available from hobby shops or over the net. Best thing is the price, $10 for both 200mL bottles! And it's quality stuff, bunnings can't beat that. Man, our dear forum desperately needs a how-to section, a this section, a that section, and 6 other sections!

Wow, that's so cheap! (for the Hanger 9 epoxy). Dang, I just bought a new pair of the ones at the marine shop ... $40! Thanks for the tip Steve.
