For the Wangaratta nationals which was late 90's I think I built a new slope soarer called a bullet. It's a southern sailplanes model. Well everything went well at the nationals. I brought it home and the first outing at Gerards lookout I was having a good time. Then, the flaps dropped. Strange I thought so went to bring it in for a landing. Missed first time so as I went around for a second pass it went off the air and went in in a blistering dive It turned out it was a flat battery and the flaps dropping was my receivers way of telling me. Oh I miss 500mah nicads LOL.
Despite this, the most severe damage was to the spar of one wing panel. I threw it in a corner in disgust and there it has stayed. It's repairable though and a couple of years ago I went to do the job and realised I couldn't find the tail! Anyway I literally walked on it yesterday (it survived) so look for a Bullet at Malaney next summer.

I flew RC slope then power with my dad in my teens, stopped when I was about 17 and only got back into it last year so my hangar is quite small. I'm really only interested in sloping these days, there's something very meditative about slope soaring, using natural currents to stay aloft. It's also cheaper which is a big bonus... My fleet: Modified Bat - fast EPP plank, flies really well this one. Weasel - slow and manvoeuvrable EPP wing. Everyone needs one of these I reckon! Recently deceased: Halfpipe (Still at Lennox Head ) Being Built: Reaper - EPP plank. Own Design 1.5M glass racer/aerobat V-tail type thing. I'm thinking of calling it "Harp oon", 'cause that's what it'll be like if the radio stops working... (BTW I had to add the space in the middle of the name there, the naughty word filter in this forum doesn't like the second part of that name, the bit starting with p and ending in o ) In Mothballs: Mijet II - This is a 1.5M balsa/foam aerobatic sloper. Dad built it in about 1990 and we never ended up flying it (instead we started flying 2-stroke powered models). I dusted it off and chucked some servos in it at Christmas and flew it down at Bonny Hills near where dad lives. Looked pretty majestic but I couldn't get an acceptable roll rate from the too small ailerons so I've pulled the servos out for use in other planes. I also cracked the balsa fuse on the last landing but this would be an easy fix. It was good to see it in the air after seeing it in dad's shed for the past 17 years! Unfinished own design balsa aerobat - Started many years back and small enough to fit in a backpack when pulled apart, because I only had a motorbike at the time. Being so small and made with a rather flimsy balsa construction it doesn't seem worth finishing now Maybe one day. Slopefun -- Dad and I learnt to fly RC with a Stepp 2 at Long Reef near Sydney in 1990. Looks a lot like the Stepp 3 but a bit more basic. We broke the wings pretty much every time we took it out, no such thing as EPP then! One time I lost control and crashed it into the guy instructing me... the wings crumbled around his upheld arm as he protected his face... It's hard to believe anyone was able to learn to fly without EPP, it was months and lots of hours working with balsa in the shed before we were flying on our own. I was 12 at the time and dad and I look back on this period fondly .

Sean, I agree - I dunno how anyone learnt to fly before EPP. I spent plenty of time tossing balsa builtup gliders around (my first was an Aries, and when it was totally wrecked I built another the same) and about 10x as much time fixing them. I wish I'd had someone beside me to help. I also erroneously thought that you'd only fly off a big hill when you were good enough, so I never tried it ... instead just threw it around in parks, used hand winching, etc. Never really got long enough in the air to work out what flying was all about. I tried to fly in fits and starts, then it was only when I saw some guys flying EPS wings at Woody Point, I thought "Wow". Went up to Maleny that weekend and bought a 2nd hand one, with radio, for $100. Everyone will be interested to hear that the elevon mixing on that plane was done mechanically- one servo worked the ailerons opposite throw, but it sat on a hinged plate which was tilted by servo no. 2! Incredible to think back. That plane outlasted various others too! Had a big canopy bubble over the servos, which looked good, and it flew slowly but well. I just can't imagine learning on balsa planes, by yourself!
